DIY Wedding Dress in the Making

I had so much fun re making this $20 prom dress I found thrifting at Goodwill. With some slight changes, I turned a simple white satin prom dress into a dreamy wedding dress. What do you think?

image
My first plan was to change the neckline from straight to a sweetheart line. I simply cut the middle and hand sewed it back shaping it into a heart. I then cut out the ribbon sash from the original dress.

To change the dull bottom skirt part of the dress, I decided to sew layers and layers of tulle that I got for $5. I sewed it in a way where I bunched up the skirt just enough to get some volume and then I attached it to a ribbon sash with an applique in the center.

Voila! That’s our after result. Altogether I spent $30! It was such a fun little project and now I’m constantly on a lookout for some potential cream colored prom dresses thrifting or if any of you would like to donate any old wedding dresses, please let us know!!!

Featured on Style Me Pretty

Yay, a bride wearing an original handmadebysarakim pearl halo was featured on StyleMePretty. I love this picture below. What a beautiful wedding and the couple looks amazing.

I love this idea of the tree planting unity ceremony, instead of the candle lighting or the sand ceremony. What a great fit for their rustic ranch wedding. Great shot by This Love Of Yours photography.

Hand-making

The process of making our handmadebysarakim chiffon waves is actually very simple. We hand-sew each rhinestone and pearl. We don’t really use any trims or appliques here in handmadebysarakim trying to keep up with our name “handmade”. Then we make the half wave of flower.

This piece is actually one of our best sellers in the new collection. I personally love the look but I thought brides wouldn’t like it as much because it’s the “half wave”. I think it’s a perfect mix of flower and bling!

Hello, I’m Sara

image
I had an amazing time with Ashley Bee getting some headshots for my “designer” profile. I was actually super shy and uncomfortable being in front of the camera but love how these pictures turned out. Thank you Ashley for the amazing pictures and thank you to my favorite makeup/hair stylist Sharon Park for making me pretty. I seriously love my hair and the hair color. Thanks Sharon :)

Hello, I’m Sara! A quick update in life. It’s been an amazing year so far with teaching music and keeping up with handmadebysarakim. I’ve had a recital for my students with few of them taking CM tests and launched a new collection for handmade. With the craziness, I’ve also been learning quite a few things- what it means to really trust in Him, my constant need of things being perfect, and how much I really need to just chill~ Learning music and being a musician is all about becoming perfect and playing pieces perfect and running a handmade wedding accessories line is to be creative, competitive, and perfect as well. It needs to look as good as what machines make. So I tend to drive myself a little crazy and this is why I’m learning and need to chill~

image
So just to let you all know, I don’t ever have my hair and makeup done with a hairpiece on my head, smiling while I sew fabric flowers haha. I’m usually in a sweater watching tv sewing flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I do very much enjoy making flowers though! I love making anything but just being real, I don’t look nearly as good as these pictures :)

Nice to meet you all.

We’re so excited to share our new collection with everyone. It has been several months of designing and re-designing to create the perfect look for our handmadebysarakim brides. We were mainly inspired by watercolor (my new hobby). We wanted to have more hairpieces with wired pearls and rhinestones but still provide floral looks for all the flower lovers and I love making flowers so many of our new pieces definitely has the fabric flowers but with our new take on it. Enjoy~

Thank you so much Ashley Bee for these amazing pictures. It was such an honor to collaborate with you in your studio. Thank you so much Elyse Reuben for the gorgeous wedding dresses, they were perfect fits with our new collection and I wish I got married again just to wear your dresses!! Last but not least, thank you tons Sharon Park for making our models even more prettier with hair&makeup and thank you for always giving me those random makeovers! Without these three lovely ladies, this collection wouldn’t nearly be as lovely. I am so blessed to have known you awesome ladies. (wedding industry ladies are pretty amazing)

Butterfly Themed Bridal Shower

My weekend was soo exciting! We had a bridal shower for my dear friend Hannah and as one of the matron of honors, I made sure to shower her with class and with lots and lots of butterflies. She REALLY loves butterflies!!! I present you a bridal shower with a butterfly theme.

Lots of handmadebysarakim touches went into this shower. Well I can’t cook, I can’t bake so my duty was decorations. Most of the decorations were DIY, from the paper flower arch with navy blue, light blue, poppy red, coral, ivory, and gold colors. The flowers also had some gold butterflies. I also sewed some table runners which was very easy as long as you find a cute fabric, which I chose the cream with gold polka dots and attached a navy blue tassel in the ends. Since Hannah’s wedding colors were going to be navy blue and gold, we put a hint of it in the shower as well. We also had some handmadebysarakim paper flower pens as favors and centerpieces with lots of faux butterflies. If you don’t know, faux butterflies are actually pretty pricey, so our second plan was to just cut out butterflies out of paper but I randomly came across a huge pack of faux butterflies thrifting at Savers!!! So I think I spent $10 for 80 butterflies. You know how much I love great deals~

Some other details with handmade banners and chalkboard signs.

Advice to all the maid of honors and bridesmaids out there- choose a theme that the bride would love, DIY crafts with a good attitude (if you are not crafty, it’s OK! initiate other duties that you would love to do for the bride), and lastly if you are not crafty and you are broke and super busy (understandable, life can be a hot mess)… constantly keep your bride in your prayers, it’s the least we can do as the bridal party.

Hannah, the bride to be, I’m so happy for you and I hope you enjoyed yourself at the shower. We love you and the butterflies loves you too.

Behind the scenes in making those paper flowers. For weeks, it was lots of labor of love but also very fun seeing these flowers on my floor. If any bridesmaids out there need any invitations, bingo cards, menu cards, party favors, paper flowers, or just some advice let us know at handmadebysarakim@gmail.com

My Form of Meditation

Lately, I have been so obsessed with just sitting down and watercoloring with some music in the background. It’s my form of meditation. I’m obviously not much of a painter, but taking some watercolor classes with my mother in law has been so much fun! Honestly, I thought I would never enjoy it since I knew I couldn’t even draw simple pictionary drawings but just like music, practice makes perfect. I’m not perfect yet but just from couple months, I’ve went from never even posting a picture of my sketches since it’s so embarrassing to now posting on my blog my past few mini drawings.

image
image
Painted a simple bride picture for a bridal shower card. I tried my best to match her dress and an original HandmadeBySaraKim hairpiece she will be wearing on her big day. It’s not the best but I had so much fun making this card. My mother in law (the real artist) provided me a watercoloring kit and my favorite is how she put mini paints in the Altoids box. I love how it’s small and recycled.

image
image
This cupcake birthday card was painted for my mother in law, how appropriate right?? since she is my watercolor teacher too :) My favorite is the little glitter I put in the frosting. In person it shimmers!!

image
image
Painted a few other ones that got turned into cards. (bridal shower card and baby shower card) I’m loving this. It really takes me to a place of joy and peace. So my goal is to watercolor a mini painting a day. For those who doubt yourself in drawing or painting, I bet if you just tried, you’d be great and you’d enjoy it!!!

OOTD for date night!

image
I haven’t been officially to the mall shopping for like couple months! So I did a “treat yourself” day and the best part was the best deals kind of got placed into my hands. I wasn’t looking for sales or anything and after I picked out a few favorites, they ended up being on super sale so I had to share with you all! My deal of the day was the Anthropologie skirt for $19.99, I think the original price was around $130. What a steal! I paired it with my new (love the color) top from Nordstrom and our sunny tiara from our new Handmadebysarakim collection. The best part of this tiara is that you can also wear it as a necklace and it looks like a one of a kind statement piece.

image
I’m loving the colors, although it feels like summer already here in Southern California, I think this will be a great spring outfit for a date night.

Music Recital with Handmade Goodies

This past weekend, I hosted a piano and violin recital for all my students and I am one proud teacher! It’s been almost 2 years since I had a recital for my students so I made sure I had some extra special handmade goodies ready for them after their performance. I made a few bows, tried to stick to the music theme with twisties and music baggies filled with some sweets. Unfortunately, I didn’t make much for the boys so I just filled their baggies with extra candy :)

image
image
Thanks to my dear friend Audrey from AudreysCreation, I also had some cute music themed cupcakes all wrapped individually in their gift bags. I say that has to be the cutest music recital party favor and my students really deserved them for working so hard with me and being tough even when I’m mean to them when they don’t practice :)

Beautiful afternoon with amazing music and I hope my students loved their Handmadebysarakim bows as much as I love them!

DIY lover

Past couple weeks has been loads of random crafts and celebrating. To start out, coasters with the cutest print ever. I instantly bought a yard of it so that I can make other handmade goodies for our craft room. Hopefully, I’ll get to make pencil cases and other covers.

image
This past weekend was officially one year since I’ve been married, so of course we started the day off with exchanging handmade cards. It was my favorite part of the day. The rest of the days I’ve been MIA with blogging, I’ve been making loads of bows, paper flowers and just catching up on orders.

DIY infinity scarf

I was looking everywhere for the perfect infinity scarf and realized I can make these at home myself so found these pretty colorful fabric my friend donated to me. Sewed it together, probably took about 5 minutes to make and there you go free infinity scarf. I think it definitely looks comparable to the super cute ones you find in stores. Go DO IT YOURSELF!!! :)

We love Christmas!

I love decorating for Christmas! It’s so much fun and I really wish it was Christmas all year long! I spent couple weeks decorating for our home, it’s our first Christmas as a married couple so we bought and made a bunch of decorations. My favorite were these felt ornaments below. You can make them at home too and get super creative!!!

After ornaments, of course I had to make some Christmas bows! Made a few for myself and I’ve been wearing them to my lessons getting my students ready for their Christmas recital :)

We can’t forget those poinsettias and yes these are paper poinsettias I made for my niece Madison's preschool teacher. I honestly think if I was the teacher, I would love receiving these more than just a gift card. I hope she loves it as much as I did. I had so much fun making these.

Newly weds- go to thrift stores and dollar stores to get all your decor. (#Christmasonabudget) We went to thrift stores and found so many cute and elegant decorations that would cost so much more at a regular store. We spent about $50 altogether for Christmas decorations which included a Christmas tree($15 at target during their half off sale), Ornaments($20 at dollar store and diy), 4 lights($5 at goodwill), and other decorations ($10).

We’d love to see all your creative Christmas spirit, visit and say hello at www.handmadebysarakim.com :)
